A large share of repair money is lost to wrong diagnoses: parts get replaced on guesses while the problem stays. Diagnostics turns that chain around - cause first, repair second. An error code is not yet a diagnosis

That is why the erase-and-see approach is no solution - a cleared code returns along with its cause.

What to bring and tell the diagnostician

Describe the symptom concretely: when it appears, under what conditions, what changed on the car recently. If codes were already read elsewhere, mention them.
