Diagnostics - pay for finding the cause, not for guessing
A large share of repair money is lost to wrong diagnoses: parts get replaced on guesses while the problem stays. Diagnostics turns that chain around - cause first, repair second. The section covers both kinds of checks: computer-based (reading errors, live sensor data) and physical - inspecting the suspension, brakes and steering.
An error code is not yet a diagnosis
A code points to a circuit or a symptom, not necessarily to a failed part: a lambda error can be caused by a wire, a misfire error by a vacuum hose. A good diagnostician uses the code as a starting point and verifies live readings before concluding. That is why the erase-and-see approach is no solution - a cleared code returns along with its cause.

What to bring and tell the diagnostician
Describe the symptom concretely: when it appears, under what conditions, what changed on the car recently. If codes were already read elsewhere, mention them.
