Choosing a headlight - optics type, side and condition
Lights are among the parts replaced most often after accidents and minor scrapes. This section brings together headlights, tail lights, fog lamps, corner lights, bulbs, xenon modules, lenses and brackets.
Optics type and the facelift
Lights for one model differ by trim: halogen, xenon and LED optics look different and are wired differently - one cannot simply be swapped for another. A facelift usually reshapes the lights too, so compare production years precisely. Left and right units are separate parts and are not interchangeable.
What to check on a used light
- Mounting tabs and brackets - the most common damage; repair kits for broken tabs are sometimes sold separately
- Moisture inside - constant condensation points to a sealing problem
- Lens condition - fine cracks and stone marks change the beam
- Completeness - bulbs, ballasts and covers are often sold separately
Yellowed lens - replace or restore
Over time the lens yellows and light output drops - that alone is not a reason to replace: polishing often restores clarity. Polishing, beam adjustment and resealing are offered by headlight services. After any replacement, have the beam aligned so you do not blind oncoming traffic.
